Col. The Boeing B-17 “Flying Fortress” was probably the most famous and best-known aircraft during WWII. The “Memphis Belle” was one of the first heavy bombers to complete 25 combat missions in the war.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe “Memphis Belle” was named after pilot Robert K Morgan's sweetheart, Margaret Polk from Memphis, Tennessee. Its nose art came from an April 1941 picture in Esquire magazine the crew chose to go with the “Memphis Belle” aircraft name. The artwork was painted in blue on one side and red on the other. The nose art later included 25 bomb shapes, one for each mission credit, and eight Nazi swastikas, one for each German aircraft the crew shot down.  The Memphis Belle was featured in several Hollywood films, but in at least one film, a different B-17 was painted to look like the real “Memphis Belle” for the film. Over the days that followed, and expecting Oahu to be invaded, orders were given to press ‘430’ into the Hawaiian Air Force. This aircraft was hurriedly painted in a wild camouflage scheme designed to hide it from another air attack, and the B-17 was used in the vein attempt to find and destroy the enemy Navy’s strike force. After invasion fears abated, 430 was sent to the South Pacific.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn March 3rd, 1943, 430, now nicknamed ‘Naughty But Nice’, took part in the Battle of the Bismarck Sea (depicted here). The B-17 was attacked from the front by two Japanese Army Air Force Ki-43 ‘Oscars’ of the 11th Sentai. The fighters ‘raked the bomber from nose to tail’. Five crew aboard 430 were wounded, the pilot, 1st Lt. James Easter, severely. ‘Naughty But Nice’ made an emergency landing, but was repaired and returned to action.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis aircraft’s last mission was flown on the night of June 26th, 1943, against the Japanese bastion of Rabaul. After making a successful bomb run, 430 was approached from beneath by a Japanese Navy J1N ‘Irving’ night fighter flown by Shigetoshi Kudo. Three passes were made by Kudo, who utilized his aircraft’s oblique-firing 20mm cannon to set the B-17 on fire. No one aboard ‘Naughty But Nice’ ever saw Kudo’s aircraft, and thought that they’d been hit by anti-aircraft ground fire. Only the B-17’s navigator, Jose Holguin, escaped by parachute. Walker, departed their base near Le Moley to photograph a railroad junction behind German lines.  Lacey was flying the 'number 2' position late in the afternoon when his aircraft was hit by ground fire.  According to Walker's report, he saw Lacey's Mustang catch fire and he attempted to contact the pilot on his radio without any response.  Within seconds the aircraft was engulfed in flames and quickly snapped over onto its back.  At low altitude, even if Lacey were conscious and responsive, there was probably very little he could have done to save himself.  In any case, he hit the ground at high velocity about 5 miles S.E. of Tessy-sir-Vire.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIn May 2009, an excavation team arrived at the spot of Lt. It escaped being fatally damaged in the attack due to its having been under repair after a previous wheels-up landing accident - repairs were completed January 1, 1942.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn January 24th, while on a routine flight, this aircraft failed to recover from a spin and crashed in the mountains killing the pilot. The wreckage remained there for over 40 years.
